MARVEL’S Secret Invasion vs DC’s Final Crisis: My Friend, My Enemy. Part 2

Published by dreamscaper at 2:21 am under comic books Edit This

So last time I ranted about how Secret Invasion was mostly a letdown for me: it was maybe okay, but the fact that it could have been so much better actually makes it more of a disappointment for me.

Now how about DC’s Final Crisis?

So far Final Crisis, written by the wonderful Grant Morrison, with art by J.G. Jones, has been an enjoyable ride. After the mess that was Infinite Crisis, I was not really anticipating this series. Considering the talent on board for it however I should have known better.

Whereas Secret Invasion started off really well and proceeded to sputter and stall until finally regaining some momentum (up to now), Final Crisis was pretty much the opposite for me: Final Crisis started slowly and had me honestly wondering if the story was going to go in a direction that would keep my interest and keep me opening my wallet each month. By the second issue however, the darkness closing in on everyone in the book was palpable and everything started getting downright creepy and i started to get drawn into it. Now we have astory thatbasically has put the DCU and its heroes in an Armageddon type scenario with a reborn Darkseid poised on the verge of victory. this is good stuff so far and has had some good support from the different one shots and minis that have been released under the Final Crisis banner.

An interesting aspect of this whole storyline is that it is not currently crossing over into the regular monthly titles and I think that it actually allows the story to develop and flow more effectively because it doesn’t have to accommodate any monthly books trying to fit into such an extreme end of the world storyline when they are all in the middle of their own storylines - especially when some of the heroes have already been turned into mindless hate slaves of Darkseid. ( that would be quite a challenge for a writer of the monthly book to have your title character standing around doing nothing but spout hate-filled one liners!)

Now this is spoiler territory, but at this point it is already common knowledge for most , that DC has (at least temporarily) brought back Barry Allen as the Flash. If it was anyone other than Morrison, I would be worried that this is nothing more than a cheap publicity grab, but it is Morrison so benefit of the doubt blinders are in full effect here.

So I am enjoying Final Crisis enough to keep buying it as well as some of the one shots such as Legion of Three Worlds. This is one series that my wallet doesn’t mind opening for.
