MARVEL’S Secret Invasion vs DC’s Final Crisis: My Friend, My Enemy.
I have spent the last few posts putting some of my thoughts about the big two’s publishing practises on virtual paper. Now I would like to take the next two posts to give my overall feelings about how the two companies yearly event books compare so far.
First up is Marvel’s Secret Invasion. I was really looking forward to this storyline when I first became aware of it; I liked that the writer Brian Bendis even suggested that the foundations of this story had been brewing for awhile already in the Marvel universe. (hinting that it went as far back as the first issue of New Avengers and even the House of M mini-series) The series started well enough: I found myself quickly drawn into the story with the first issue and was really looking forward to the ride to see where it was all going.
Unfortunately this feeling of anticipation didn’t last. By the third issue any momentum that this series had built up with its surprising revelations of who was or wasn’t who they seemed had been lost, with the heroes of the story just hanging around in the Savage Land biting their nails and whining for the most part. In fact, it wasn’t until the sixth issue (of an eight issue mini-series) that the main players were returned to the civilized world and things finally got interesting again with the set up for an old fashioned battle royal - which will presumably lead to the resolution of the series, and set things up for the embrace change storyline to follow.
So overall, a big disappointment so far, considering that almost four issues were wasted for the most part with too many of the major players just being left to spin their wheels. Even a really well done ending won’t change that fact. At least the supporting stories told in many of the regular Marvel titles have been for the most part pretty enjoyable - especially the Avengers group of books crossover stories.
Next time I will give an up-to-now review ofn DC’s Final Crisis mini-series.
