Event book odds and ends

Published by dreamscaper at 2:14 am under comic books Edit This

This will be a shorter post tonight: I have just finished spending half of the evening watching my favourite hockey team (the Vancouver Canucks) lose a close game in an overtime shoot-out.

After my rant about Marvel and DC’s recent habit of publishing event b ook after event book, I started to think about what else I have been noticing - and in some cases not noticing.

With their recent Secret Invasion storyline, Marvel has been very effective at tying-in almost their complete line of regular comic books into the Skrull invasion storyline; In fact, some of the tie in books (the avengers titles, Mighty Avengers and New Avengers come to mind) have actually been more enjoyable to read than much of the actual Secret Invasion issues themselves. This is funny considering that the miniseries and the Avengers books are all written by the same guy at this time. To be honest, I think that the tie in books have allowed the writer to focus on or flesh out parts of the story in a way that he might have wanted to do so in the mini but was just not able to for reasons of space. I won’t get into a full review of Secret Invasion here and now, but suffice to say that it could have been better so far.

The something that I have not noticed, has to do with DC and their Final Crisis series. I was at a comicshop today and was ablw to confirm a sneaking suspicion that I already had: that there are no real tie ins in the regular DC monthly series to the Final Crisis series as of yet; sure there have been many one shots and a few mini series tie ins, but nothing with the regular books. I don’t know if it is simply a chronology issue (ie maybe the mini is set after the current issues of the monthly books?) or what but it is rather surprising to me. My wallet doesn’t mind though.

Another thing I noticed at the comic shop today was the effect of my weaker Canadian dollar on my comic book purchases. The store actually had to readjust prices up higher than the Canadian price printed on the covers. Ouch! Frown
